About the Lamb
Riverfront Lamb & Hogget…is not a red meat commercial venture- we do things in simple natural ways for our own family’s well being. Super-productivity is by no means our goal.
A few years ago I became very sick, suffered a stroke and general work became just too hard. To keep the grasses down around the trees and flowers I improved our mowers, tried casual staff, but it was still too unreliable and difficult. My neighbour suggested we try to employ dorper sheep! They turn up to work on time, they start work early and the benefits can go on. Before long I was hooked on these sheep and soon after our flock grew from 15 to over 200.
Free Range, Organic Raised, Pasture fed Lamb, from Coonabarabran in Central West NSW.
Our animals’ health & well being
I have become very close to my sheep and I thoroughly understand the word shepherd. We trust each other and their well being is for most in our minds at all times. Our ewes present their lambs as I do my daily rounds which enables me to keep a close contact with their offspring to ensure their well-being is never jeopardised. We sell only the extra production stud stock and produce destined to be non-breeding animals such as our wethers. All of our animals are reared on native pasture and have very little, if any, veterinarian interference.

‘Samson’
– one of our Rams
The ancient weathered soils of the Warrumbungles lack many of the minerals needed by hoofed grazing animals so supplementary minerals are delivered into our system through bio-dynamic pasture management and selective supplements for our animals at peak times of the years natural cycle. Our sheep enjoy and do well on naturally combined lick supplements that contain trace elements and minerals found in seaweed, salts such as potassium and magnesium and molasses. We’re extremely proud of all our dorper sheep.

Grass fed vs Grain Fed
Red meat is one of the best sources of iron and zinc which is well absorbed by the body. It is a source of omega-3 and a good source of B vitamins and protein. Harem iron, found only in meat and fish, is absorbed four times better by the body than non harem iron, found in plant foods.
As more people become aware of the health benefits in grass fed beef, and lamb there will be more of it available. It’s simply the law of supply and demand. The community create supply by demanding certain types of foods.
The sheep at “Riverfront” are grazed on open pasture for most of the year, but as the heat goes out of summer and the nights start to cool the native grasses start to set seed. In late summer Dorper are versatile and they thrive on pasture grazing and foraging to satisfy their hunger. Grass fed lamb also excel nutritionally in vitamin A, E and Beta carotene, over grain fed stock.
Our sheep are moved off this country into less open and more sheltered areas and are supplemented through winter with Oat grains and Lucerne hay to allow the pastures to regenerate. Our dorper breed offer uncomplicated reproduction and ease of lambing with naturally excellent maternal instincts and good milking capacity. They live a no stress life. No dogs, no freight, no sale yards – it’s just nature at work!

About cryovac packaging
Cryovac is the brand name of a type of superior packaging technology that allows fresh goods to be kept fresher for longer. Depending when you plan to eat your meat you can choose to keep products in the fridge for a longer period of time and can avoid freezing your meat (which we believe affects the taste and tenderness). At Riverfront lamb we choose to package our Pasture Fed Lamb products in Cryovac for your convenience.
There are some effects of using Cryovac packaging, but we believe these are far outweighed by the advantages. Specifically, the meat will change to a darker red colour while in the packaging due to the lack of exposure to oxygen. The meat will also sweat while in the packaging and this can result in an unpleasant smell when you first open the packaging (this is not an indication of the freshness of the meat). To overcome both of these effects, all you need to do is when you’re ready to eat your meat, simply remove it from the packaging and leave it out for 10-15 minutes. When out of the packaging and exposed to oxygen again the meat will return to the usual red colour. Once you’ve removed the meat, simply rinse out the bag and throw it in the bin and the smell will disappear too.
